Laggan Cottage - Isle of Arran, Scotland

Laggan Cottage is from another age. Part of a thriving community over a century ago, it now stands alone in the wild - a memory of what once was. It is a fabulous conduit to a time when the sea was the only highway and a channel to that part of us we sometimes forget. Being there, we become part of the landscape, part of the natural world that surrounds it. In the height of summer, walkers are drawn to the area but even at that time, peace is the norm and it is rare to see another soul before noon or after 4 pm. If you need your daily fix of people, it is best to avoid the months from October to April when you will find yourself alone with the birds and the sea and whoever you've decided to share this special place with.

A haven for artists, Laggan so impressed author Paul Story that it became the seed for Creggan Cottage in the first novel in the Dreamwords Series. A rustic retreat, the cottage uses a crystal-clear burn for water but it is not devoid of modern comforts. A large kitchen with a conventional butane-gas cooker has the luxury of a wide open fireplace and the lounge has an enclosed fire with glass doors. A double bed fills a small downstairs bedroom and two attic rooms have one and two single beds so that the complete dwelling can house 5 people in old-fashioned comfort. For those who like to mix centuries, by a quirk of fate and a view across the sea to distant modernity, the mobile phone and 3G signals in and around the cottage are excellent although there is no pizza delivery service or TV.

The following video was taken over a period of four weeks in the summer of 2010 by Paul Story when he stayed there. Most of the scenes were taken within a few steps of the cottage and only one beyond fifteen minutes walk from the front door.
